January/February 2008--Prayer Letter

January-February 2008

Vol. 22, No. 1-2

Dear Family and Friends,

The new year is in full swing with a busy travel schedule ahead. But the year began with a surprise.

Moscow trip cancelled

Charley was due to travel to Moscow, Russia January 14-19 to attend a seminar for writing online courses sponsored by the EAAA, for which he is the International Assistant. But God had other plans. When he went to apply for a visa at the Russian Consulate in Vienna they wouldn’t even consider his application. We’re hoping that this is a one-off fluke and not a future pattern which might hinder his ministering in Russia in the future. Needless to say, Charley was very disappointed in not being able to go to Moscow as he had to cancel several meetings with missionaries that he had already had set up.

Note: A major prayer request is for missionaries in Russia facing new visa regulations. These new regulations might require missionaries to leave the country every 90 days and stay out of the country for 90 days before they could return to Russia. Missionaries would also be required to apply for new visas only when they are in their passport country; in other words, American missionaries would have to apply for a Russian visa only while they were in the States and only to the Russian Consulate in Washington, D.C.; Australian citizens could only apply in Australia, and so forth. You can imagine how these new regulations might be highly disruptive for missionary families from around the world, especially in regard to schooling their children. It could be that many missionaries currently in Russia will move to Ukraine and then occasionally travel to Russia for ministry.

Upcoming Ministry Travel:

Feb. 26-March 2 European Member Care Consultation near Lille, France. Charley will leading an evening session on “Hot Topics” in Member Care, coordinate the small groups at the conference and will also officially rejoin the Member Care Europe leadership team.

April 13-19 Charley has EAAA meetings in Lviv, Ukraine, visiting seminaries, and missionaries.

April 25 - May 3 Charley teaching a missions course at the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Armenia; also visiting missionaries and national church leaders.

June 5-10 Charley at the Barnabas International staff and Board meetings in Elgin, IL

June 11 Melissa graduates from Vienna Christian School in Vienna, Austria.

June 13 Elizabeth leaves for the States to begin her summer ministry with Teen Missions in Nicaragua.

June 14-20 Charley in Lviv, Ukraine, for EAAA Board meetings and visiting a missionary training school (where he might be involved in training national missionaries),

June 22 Melissa leaves for the States and the Barnabas International “Reentry Seminar” for missionary kids at Biola University in California.

Prague

Our family spent a delightful weekend in Prague in January, staying with missionary friends and hearing Melissa sing in a 100-voice Honor Choir. Students from Christian schools in 11 countries sang in the choir, a memorable experience for Melissa and wonderful to hear.

Financial update

For the first time in years our Barnabas International support account is solidly in the black thanks to several generous donations we received in November and December 2007. Thank you! Praise the Lord! Please pray that the US Dollar will strengthen against the Euro. As of Feb. 1st the US Dollar is $1.48 to 1 Euro.

Website update

We are still working on updating our website and improving our email communications with you. We thought we would have this completed by the end of January but Charley had severe allergy and asthma problems for the first three weeks of the month which has delayed progress on the website. Sorry about this. We will notify you as soon as everything is up and running smoothly.
